    Photo and Info: Chilean Navy

The cargo ship "Micalvi", a legendary pontoon ship that the Chilean Navy makes available to sailboats that call at Puerto Williams, was built at the Osterseewerft Shipyards, in Stettin, Germany, in 1925.
Rhine garbage ship, in Germany, purchased in 1928 to transport the ammunition of the battleship "Almirante Latorre" to Chile and then meant to be scrapped and sold. However, it was renovated and destined for the Punta Arenas area, where it provided valuable services to settlers in uninhabited areas, especially Tortel and Navarino, and contributed to establishing sovereignty in the legitimately Chilean territories.
She was discharged by D.S. N 2,026 of May 31st, 1961 and destined for a pontoon, after 33 years of active service in the Navy. As of August 24th, 1961, she was destined for Puerto Williams as a Museum and was declared a "historic ship" by the International Commission on Historic Ships.
